Creativity in Design
Engineers of all disciplines have common approaches to solving problems including teamwork, communication, and an iterative design process. Creative thinking is key to innovation and solving the many challenges facing our world. Engineers use a design process to help turn messy, creative ideas into workable solutions.
As a student engineer, you will document your design process to help you organize your work and support your decisions. But remember, a design process is rarely linear—steps are often repeated and an optimal solution found through iteration.

Here is your first opportunity to practice creative thinking and a design process. You will work as part of a team to complete a short problem-solving task—an Instant Challenge—that requires you to apply a design process. Let's get to work!
- Read through the Design Process resource to recall the steps of the design process.
- Read through all of the challenge directions before you begin your work.
- Familiarize yourself with the available materials.
- Complete the Instant Challenge
METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY
To work successfully in a distance learning environment, it is important for you to explore and understand how you learn. Before we begin your first Instant Challenge, let's do just that!
Metacognition is a term that means to "think about your thinking." For instance, think about how you have read the words on this activity page:
- Did you make a plan before reading as to how you were going to highlight or make notes on the page?
- Did you think about how you were going to ask for help when you read something you didn't understand?
- Did you preread or skim the boldface words and headings to get an idea of what was on the page?
These are examples of metacognitive strategies that help you accomplish the task of reading and understanding a page of text.
Review the Metacognition document. Follow your teacher's instructions to create your learning journal.
Instant Challenge
Your Goal: Using only the materials provided, design and build a device to launch a small beanbag and send it as far as possible.
Represent Your Data
A box plot, or a box-and-whisker plot, is a graphical model of data for a single variable. Box plots allow you to quickly get an idea of the center and variability of a set of data.
- Create a box plot to represent your data from the 10 launches.
- Using your box plot and data set, predict the distance of the next launch. Justify your prediction and provide evidence using experimental data.

Unit 1 Distance Learning Problem
Throughout this course you will have a chance to apply thedesign process to generate, test, and present innovative solutions to various problems. The Unit 1 Problem will challenge you to think creatively when designing a product.
Organization Is Key
To facilitate your learning while not in school, you will design a product to help organize your distance learning workspace. Perhaps you need a way to store your different writing utensils. Or you may need to organize different class folders or notebooks. You may wish to create a stand for your cell phone to provide another way to access content during distance learning activities. Consider what will best help you be successful, and use the skills you learn in this unit to design your product.
Reflection Question : While learning away from school, what are some questions you can use to evaluate your learning both during and after an activity, project, or problem?
